HACKING COMMITMENT
I checked out this new book called Commit to Win by Heidi Reeder.
I have found that recently the commitment to my goals feels strong, but the follow-through sometimes is lacking. I have a lot of desire and wishful thinking around them, but sometimes I struggle to get the small steps done leading up to the bigger picture.
Reeder provides an equation for basically how committed we will be. The equation is as follows:
(Treasure – Troubles) + Contributions – Choices = Level of Commitment
Treasures are defined as aspects of an activity that you find rewarding and fulfilling.
Troubles are the parts of an activity that you find challenging are costly.
Contribution reflects tangible and intangible resources you have invested in an activity or relationship that cannot be fully retrieved if you walk away.
Choices refer to the degree to which you have other good options.
She literally broke each part so I could look at each commitment in my life and decide which factors outweighed others.
Here is a brief story from the book:
The number one predictor of someone staying with a fitness regime was feeling involved with the fitness club. Highly committed members enjoy their instructors, the front desk people, and the opportunities for friendship. The value formal and informal communication is what keeps them connected.
